Lesson Two - The Jacobite Rising

Dragonfly in Amber is the second book in the Outlander series. Here Claire and Jamie head to Paris, in an attempt to stop the Jacobite Rising. The Jacobite rising will ultimately lead to the disastrous Battle of Culloden, which is  the final confrontation that ends the way of  the Scotish Highlanders.

The uprising started with the deposition of James II in the Revolution of 1688 and ended with the death of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1788. James II was the last Roman Catholic monarch to reign over England, Scotland and Ireland. He was invaded by his Protestant son-in-law and overthrown. James was then forced into exile in France.

The first Jacobite rising took place from 1689 – 1692. It started with Viscount Dundee, whom was James' most enthusiastic Scottish supporter. He rallied troops and turned to military action, which he would use against William and Mary's government forces. The first Jacobite did not prove popular at the time.

In 1707, Scotland and England united much to their dismay to help the Jacobite cause. James VIII/III attempted to claim the throne twice, in 1708 and in 1715. James was known as “The Old Pretender” and went on to lead the Battle of Sherrifmuir in 1715 and The Battle of Eilean in 1719.

Thus Prince Charles Edward Stuart, also known as “Bonnie Prince Charlie” comes into the picture. We learn a lot about him in the Outlander series. Jamie Fraser becomes one of his biggest supporters in an attempt to change the fate of Scotland.

Bonnie Prince Charlie was also known as “The Young Pretender.” He was the grandson of the catholic King James VII of Scotland and II of England. He believed that the throne of Great Britain rightfully belonged to the House of Stuart. Thus began the campaign to overthrow King George II and reclaim the throne.

After a failed attempt to persuade the French government to commit to another invasion, Prince Charles decides to fund his own rising. He sails from France to Scotland in July of 1745. There he travels across the Highlands and assembles his own Jacobite army.

In 1745 Prince Charles launches his first attempt to reclaim the throne his Grandfather lost in 1688. With much success along the way, Prince Charles was eventually halted at the Battle of Culloden on April 16, 1746 by the Duke of Cumberland and the Red Coats. This will be the last major battle to ever be fought on British soil.  The Battle of Culloden lasted less than an hour.  Cumberland and the Red Coats took 1,500-2,000 Jacobite casualties that day.  With the down fall of the Jacobites, the British Government enacted laws to incorporate Scotland—specifically the Scottish Highlands—within the rest of Britain. Members were required to give oaths of allegiance to the reigning Hanoverian dynasty.
